Creativity is most simply defined as the ability to make things. Creativity feeds us by producing golden brown loaves of raisin-studded bread, layers of green, crispy salads, and warm sunshine circles of omelets. It clothes us as designers create pants rugged enough to go hiking through grasping bushes and rayon slacks to convey professionalism and style. It prompts change in the voice of speakers encouraging focus or action on social, moral, intellectual, or environmental consciousness. Creativity solves problems through the birth of theorems and equations composed of strings of numbers and experiments calculated to answer questions continually asked by human intelligence. Creativity moves through dance and expressive gestures. And the gift of creativity charms us through canvases covered with thick brush strokes of color, harmonies and melodies pouring from the throats of singers, photographs capturing ages and moments, and stories that fill the pages of books, stages flanked by heavy curtains, movie screens, and imaginations. Creativity applies to every occupation, every study, every problem, and, most especially, every art form.
A musician’s creativity births notes and sound, blending emotion with art to create a language written in universal expression. As this expression reaches listeners, their moods respond to levels that can extend out to the physical body. It is a worldwide and phenomenon reaching across classes, across genres, and across cultures.
The stage has been a gift to generations as it brings the magic of storytelling to audiences throughout the world. Often the only way that illiterate societies share literature, the stage has brought literature to those who would otherwise never experience it. Those who are literate receive engaging and animated versions of tales through the talents of playwrights, directors, actors, and musicians.
Writing is the invention that supports the progress of a culture; it preserves identity and tradition and reaches generations beyond its initial creation. Part of the enduring nature of writing is due to its ease of replication. Unlike a painting, photograph, or musical performance on a summer’s evening, writing can be copied with the simplest of materials and so preserved for those to come. But, the written word offers more than just permanence; it also presents the option of flexibility.
Images evoke the response of the viewer’s intelligence and creativity. Art forms based on visual stimulation, like photography, painting, and illustration, are the silent language of creativity. Through washes of color, swirling forms, sharp lines, fading shades, or film realism, images communicate emotion without sound and without activity, proving the power of what we see. When artists create images, they open the private showings of their imaginations and describe the visions, lovely or dreadful, that most people keep for their own delight or torture.
